SEEC Semester

Ecological Leadership Courses

SEEC high school students in both grade 11 & 12 explore five interconnected courses to earn 20 important credits towards graduation. Assignments often "count" for more than one of our courses, allowing us to learn in a more effective, in-depth and real-life way.

Community Connections: Independent Directed Studies (IDS) 4 credits
Design your own course, create your own project, and then celebrate it with your peers and community! Our students have published books, taught workshops, designed clothing, sold their artwork, constructed buildings, made movies, written plays, created wonderful meals, learned to take care of horses, painted murals, guided kayakers and taken command of a traditional Spanish long boat! With the support of teachers, peers, and their very own Community Mentor, SEEC students regularly venture beyond the walls of our school to learn about what's going on "out there"!

Ecological Citizenship: Science & Technology 11 4 science credits
Become part of our action research team as we explore the natural resources, community systems, and sustainable technologies of the Gulf Islands and beyond! Each semester, we'll focus on four unique themes in the areas of natural resources, agriculture, housing and transportation. We'll discover where our food comes from, how our homes are constructed, and how we get from one place to another. We'll learn by immersing ourselves within the systems we are studying, tackling authentic hands-on challenges to become a positive force within our human and natural communities.

Teaching & Learning 11 4 credits
Explore your leadership potential while discovering more about who you are as a learner and a teacher. You'll become a trained "Environmentor", responsible for guiding visiting groups of adventurers as they learn more about the natural world through games, challenges and dramatic endeavours. You'll become an esteemed Big Buddy for a younger student, sharing your talents, creativity and knowledge as an effective role model.

Environmental Communication (English or Communications 11 or 12) 4 credits
Develop your communication skills through engaging reading, writing, presenting, and awareness activities with an ecological theme. You'll learn how to add power and artistry to what you have to say, while strengthening your ability to understand and relate to the world around you. Picture yourself immersed in a great book on a beautiful beach, reflecting in your journal atop a rocky ridge as bald eagles soar by, or caught up in an animated discussion with your amazing SEEC colleagues!

Outdoor Adventures (Physical Education 11 or 12) 4 credits
Get out there and active through a variety of games, challenges, explorations and wilderness pursuits. Our students hike, bike, kayak, dodge, dive, balance and pull together all over Saturna Island and beyond! We blend cooperative, competitive and individual activities within a diverse array of alternative environments. Our students participate actively, but also lead activities, organize games, and teach others about their own outdoor pursuits.
